About
每 originally depicted a woman (母) with a hairpin in her hair, a mark of a young woman of marriageable age in ancient China, where such adornment signified adulthood. The character was later borrowed purely for its sound to convey the meaning "each" or "every", a usage that completely replaced the original sense. Today it functions as a distributive pronoun for individual members of a group, frequency, or regular occurrences, with no remaining connection to its early pictographic form.
