About
舞 originally depicted a dancer adorned with ox tails or bird feathers hanging from the arms, performing a rain prayer. This pictograph was written as 無, but after that graph was borrowed for other meanings, the 舛 (two feet) component was added to emphasize the stepping action. In its modern form, 舛 at the bottom suggests the alternating footwork of dance, while the upper part shows the dancer's body and waving decorations. The meaning broadened from ritual movement to all forms of dance, choreography, and the rhythmic wielding of weapons in martial arts.
