About
The character 淫 is a phono-semantic compound with the water radical 氵 on the left and the phonetic component 㸒 (yín) on the right. It originally meant prolonged or excessive rainfall. Over time, its meaning shifted from literal flooding to metaphorical excess, eventually developing a strong moral sense of debauchery and illicit sexual behavior. While modern usage overwhelmingly associates it with obscenity and immorality, in classical texts or certain compound words, it can still describe general excess or overindulgence without necessarily implying sexual misconduct.
