xióng (noun) bear
xióng (adjective) weak; incapable

Etymology

Combination of (bear) and (big).

About

combines , an ancient pictograph of a bear, with (big). Originally, the graph alone meant 'bear', but it was habitually borrowed for its sound to convey 'ability' or 'capability'. To resolve the ambiguity, was added, creating the distinct character for the animal. Over time, permanently assumed the literal bear meaning, while retained only the abstract sense of talent or power. The addition of not only settled the semantic confusion but also subtly underscores the bear's imposing size.
