About
The character 甬 originally depicted an ancient Chinese bell, likely a type of bronze bell. The lower part of the graph was later reanalyzed as the component 用, resulting in its modern form. The original meaning fell out of use, and the character was borrowed to represent a raised path or walled corridor, commonly seen in architectural terms such as 甬道 (a paved, often covered pathway) and 甬路 (a walled walkway). Additionally, 甬 is the standard abbreviation for Ningbo and its surrounding region, derived from the Yong River (甬江) that flows through the area. Today, the architectural and geographic uses remain standard, while the bell meaning is archaic.
