About
The character 祔 is a phono-semantic compound. Its left component, 示 (shì), often written as 礻, relates to spirits or rituals, while the right component, 付 (fù, "to hand over"), provides the phonetic element. Historically, it denated a joint sacrifice, specifically the rite of placing a newly deceased person's spirit tablet into the ancestral temple alongside those of their predecessors. The meaning later broadened to refer to joint burials or the ritual placement of entities together in a sacred space.
