About
羧 is a phono-semantic compound made up of the semantic component 羊 (sheep/goat) and the phonetic 夋. In its original usage, it was a specialized term for a particular kind of sheep or a concept related to caprines. In modern chemistry, however, it was completely repurposed to represent the carboxyl group, chosen because its sound suō blends the Chinese words for acid (酸, suān) and oxygen (氧, yǎng). The sheep radical remains visually, but today the character serves purely as chemical nomenclature, an intentional repurposing of an obscure character for exact scientific translation.
