About

The character "邱" originates from the older character "丘", which originally depicted two mounds or hills and carried the primary meaning of a small hill or mound. To this root meaning, the阜 radical (阝, on the left when used as a component) was added, which is associated with earth, terrain, or elevations, thereby creating a character that more explicitly denotes a hillock or a earthen mound. Over time, while retaining its geographical connotation, "邱" became predominantly adopted as a common surname in China, a role it largely inherited from "丘". The traditional form of the character maintains this structure of阜 combined with丘, with the latter component also providing its phonetic value.
