About

is a phono-semantic compound formed by the semantic radical ('mouth') and the phonetic component . In ancient literature, it described the swift, rushing sound or the unbridled movement of horse-drawn chariots. This meaning later fell out of use, and the character was deliberately borrowed in modern biochemistry as a phonetic loan to transcribe 'purine'. Today, it occurs almost exclusively in 嘌呤 (piaoling), referring to organic compounds found in cells and dietary sources.
