About
The character 嚣 (traditional: 囂) is a phono-semantic compound whose structure visually conveys its primary meaning of loud noise or clamor. The traditional form features four 口 (mouth) radicals surrounding the central component 頁 (head), vividly depicting multiple voices shouting around a person’s head to suggest a noisy, chaotic environment. In the simplified version, the four mouths remain, but the complex 頁 is reduced to a simpler form, lowering the stroke count while preserving the original layout. Over time, this core sense of hubbub naturally extended to describe demeanor, giving rise to secondary meanings of arrogance, haughtiness, or insolence, as the idea of being loud and overbearing became linked with an aggressive or boastful personality.
