The character 埒 is a phono-semantic compound with the semantic radical 土 (earth) on the left and the phonetic component 寽. Its original meaning referred to a low earthen wall or boundary, derived from the soil radical. This concrete sense of a leveled enclosure later evolved to represent the abstract idea of equality or being on par with someone else.
