The character 埭 (dài) is a phono-semantic compound: the earth radical 土 (meaning earth) on the left gives the semantic category, while 隶 (lì) on the right provides the sound. Its primary meaning is an earthen dam, weir, or lock used in traditional water management and irrigation systems. Historically, these structures were built across rivers or canals to regulate water levels, enabling flat-bottomed boats to be pulled over an incline between waterways of different elevations.
