About
厮 (sī) is the simplified form of 廝, a phonosemantic compound. The outer radical 厂 (hàn, cliff) serves as the meaning component, while the inner 斯 (sī), which otherwise means "this" or "thus", provides the sound. The traditional character used the shelter radical 广 (yǎn) to suggest a domestic environment, but the simplified 厂 fills a similar semantic role. The character refers to a male servant or menial worker, and also to the action of fighting or tearing. Originally denoting those doing lowly household chores, it later broadened into a mildly derogatory term for a fellow, and developed a verbal sense of close-quarters combat or tearing at one another.
