About

The character 浔 is a phono-semantic compound, formed by the semantic radical 氵 (shuǐ, water) on the left and the phonetic component 寻 (xún, to seek) on the right. Its traditional form 潯 uses the unsimplified phonetic element 尋. Originally, it denoted a steep riverbank or waterside. Today, it is found mainly in geographic names, such as Xunyang (浔阳), the ancient name for Jiujiang, and as an abbreviation for areas along the Xunjiang River in Guangxi.
