About
The character 粪 consists of the upper component 米 (grain) and the lower component 共 (together). Its traditional form, 糞, uses 米 above the component 異 (different). The character originally meant the act of sweeping away dirt and refuse. Over time, the meaning shifted from the action to the refuse itself, specifically denoting excrement or dung. In agricultural societies, such waste was collected and used as fertilizer, so the character also came to mean manure.
