About
The character 羁 (jī; traditional 羈) is built from three elements: the net radical 罒 (网, wǎng) at the top, the leather component 革 (gé) in the middle, and the horse radical 马 (馬, mǎ) at the bottom. Together they create an image of a leather halter, a net-like device for controlling a horse. While the character originally meant a horse's bridle or harness, its meaning later expanded to cover the ideas of detaining a person, restricting someone's freedom, and being hindered by everyday obligations or travel delays.
