About

(traditional: ) is a phono-semantic compound: the radical (from , 'cart') on the left provides the meaning of a wheeled vehicle, and the element (zhì) on the right indicates the sound. It originally referred to a carriage whose front end sits lower than the rear, and today survives mainly in the compound 轩轾 (xuānzhì), where it contrasts with (high-front carriage) to metaphorically evaluate superiority and inferiority.
