About
邢 is a phono-semantic compound combining the meaning component 阝 (a form of 邑, "city") on the right and the phonetic component 开 on the left, historically derived from 幵. During the Zhou dynasty, it referred to the State of Xing, a vassal state in modern Hebei province. After the state dissolved and its geographical significance faded, the character lost its primary association and became almost exclusively a surname, now a relatively common Chinese family name.
