About

The character is formed by (gāo, 'high') as the phonetic on the left and the radical, which denotes a city or settlement, on the right. Throughout Chinese history, it served almost exclusively as a proper noun referring to an ancient county and settlement in modern Hebei province. Consequently, its use is mainly confined to historical texts, genealogical records, and studies of ancient administrative divisions, particularly those of the Han and surrounding dynasties.
