About
The character 鞨 (hé) is historically paired with 靺 to denote ancient nomadic tribes of northeastern Asia. As a phono-semantic compound, it combines the semantic radical 革 (gé), meaning leather, with the phonetic component 曷 (hé). The leather radical originally pointed to a tangible object: the character specifically referred to a type of leather shoe or a distinctive leather turban worn by northern peoples. Over time, its meaning shifted from describing these cultural garments to serving as a phonetic placeholder for the tribe's name in imperial Chinese records.
