About
The character 匈 is a phono-semantic compound: the outer component 勹 conveys the meaning of wrapping or enclosing, while 凶 indicates the pronunciation. In its earliest use, 匈 referred to the human chest or thorax, evoking the ribcage enclosing the vital organs. Later, the flesh radical was added to create 胸, which took over the anatomical meaning, and the original 匈 was repurposed almost exclusively as a phonetic loan for the Xiongnu, a confederation of nomadic peoples, in historical texts.
