Etymology
Pictograph of a man. The top horizontal stroke either distinguishes it from the character 大 or depicts a hairpin, something that was only worn by adults.
About
The character "夫" is structurally composed of "一" placed over "大", a configuration that originated from a pictorial representation of a man wearing a hairpin to indicate adulthood. Its original meaning of "adult man" later specialized to mean "husband", and in classical Chinese, it functioned as a grammatical particle. While the nominal meanings of man and husband continue in modern usage, the particle usage is largely archaic.
