About
晕, the simplified form of 暈, originally depicted thin clouds encircling the sun (日). Later, the cloud imagery was replaced by the phonetic component 军 (from 軍), giving the character its sound. The earliest meaning was a solar or lunar halo, which extended metaphorically to dizziness and fainting, likening the blurred, spinning sensation to the halo's visual effect.
