About
望 (wàng) means gaze, hope, and expect. It originated as a pictograph of a person standing up (𡈼) looking at the moon (月), with 亡 added as a sound component. In modern script, the character combines the phonetic 亡 with the semantic 月 and a base derived from the standing person, now written 王 or 壬. The image of a person gazing at the moon directly gave the sense of looking into the distance, which later extended to the hopeful expectation of watching for something.
