About
The character 浮 is built with the water radical 氵 on the left and the phonetic 孚 (fú) on the right. Its original meaning was the physical action of an object remaining buoyant on the surface of water. Because such objects have no deep roots and are easily moved by currents or wind, the meaning broadened to describe things that are unsteady, transient, or fleeting. This gave rise to a sense of superficiality, applied to behaviors, thoughts, or attitudes that lack depth, seriousness, and a solid foundational grounding.
