About

is a phono-semantic compound combining the water radical (shuǐ), which marks the character's liquid associations, and the phonetic component (yè). Its original meaning was the act of dredging a well or clearing accumulated mud and sediment from a body of water to restore a clean flow. From this literal water-management sense, it broadened to mean discharging, dispersing, or eliminating, as in removing waste or scattering a crowd, while always retaining a link to its aquatic origin.
