About
纪 is the simplified form of 紀, a phono-semantic compound combining the silk radical (糸 → 纟) and the phonetic 己. The silk component points to the original act of sorting silk threads to find the main one. This notion of ordering threads then expanded metaphorically to mean recording, establishing rules, and maintaining discipline, and from there came to denote a period of time, era, or historical age through its link to chronological organization.
