About
胑 is a phono-semantic compound: the flesh radical 月 on the left indicates a body part, while 只 on the right provides the pronunciation zhī. It served as an older variant of 肢, which denotes the limbs or extremities of humans and animals. Standard orthography later favored 支 as the phonetic component, making 肢 the prevailing form and leaving 胑 largely obsolete.
