The character 轵, whose traditional form is 軹, is semantically and structurally linked to vehicles, as indicated by its radical 車 (车 in its simplified form, meaning "cart" or "vehicle"). Its other component, 只 (zhǐ), primarily functions as a phonetic indicator to suggest pronunciation. The original and core meaning of 軹/轵 was the metal cap or pin at the end of an axle to keep the wheel in place, a specific part of ancient chariot construction. From this concrete mechanical referent, its meaning extended in classical texts to denote the axle-head itself. In a separate development, the character was also borrowed phonetically to represent the name of an ancient town, Jǐ, located in modern Henan province. The modern simplified form 轵 maintains the same structural relationship, exchanging the traditional radical 車 for its simplified counterpart 车 while retaining the phonetic component 只.
