About

The character (traditional ) is a phono-semantic compound with the vehicle radical on the left and the phonetic on the right. Its original meaning was the end of an axle on a horse-drawn cart or chariot, a specific component of traditional wheeled vehicles. As carts and chariots became obsolete, this literal sense disappeared from common language; today, the character survives mostly in historical documents and as the proper noun Zhi, an ancient county in what is now Henan province.
