About

The character 轵 (traditional form 軹) is a phono-semantic compound with the vehicle radical 车 on the left and the phonetic component 只 on the right. It originally referred to the end of an axle on a traditional horse-drawn cart or chariot, a specific part of historical wheeled transportation. As chariots and wooden carts fell out of common use, the character’s literal meaning became rare, surviving mainly in historical texts or as a geographical name for the ancient county of Zhi in present-day Henan province.
