About
The Chinese character 轸, traditional form 軫, is a phono-semantic compound. Its semantic radical 车 indicates a connection to vehicles or carts, while the phonetic component 㐱 provides the pronunciation. Originally, the character referred to the crossboard at the rear of a traditional carriage, a structural element in horse-drawn transportation. Its meaning later expanded from this physical automotive origin to encompass metaphorical feelings of distress, sorrow, or profound pain. In traditional Chinese astronomy, the character also designates the Chariot, one of the Twenty-Eight Mansions in the classical star catalog.
