The Chinese character 轸, traditional form 軫, is a phono-semantic compound. Its semantic radical 车 indicates a connection to vehicles or carts, while the phonetic component 㐱 provides the pronunciation. Originally, the character referred to the crossboard at the rear of a traditional carriage, a structural element in horse-drawn transportation. Its meaning later expanded from this physical automotive origin to encompass metaphorical feelings of distress, sorrow, or profound pain.
