Its traditional form, 逕, is a phono-semantic compound: the radical 辶 (movement) suggests walking, while 巠 provides the phonetic element. In simplification, 巠 was replaced by 𢀖, forming the current structure. Originally meaning a narrow footway, it extended to function as an adverb meaning "directly" or "straightaway", especially in formal contexts, to describe an action without detours.
