suí the Sui dynasty (581–617 AD); surname Sui

Etymology

Phonosemantic compound. represents the sound and ⺼ represents the meaning.

About

The character 隋 is best known as the name of the Sui Dynasty, which unified China in the late sixth century. Structurally, it combines the mound radical 阝 on the left with components on the right that originally den torn flesh or sacrificial meat. The character’s historical prominence stems from a deliberate imperial name change. The dynasty’s founder, Yang Jian, originally held the title Duke of Sui, written as 隨 with the movement radical 辶. Concerned that this radical implied departure and thus a short reign, he removed it to ensure his empire’s longevity, formally adopting 隋 for his dynasty and shifting its primary use from a descriptive noun to an imperial proper name.
