The character 冒 is an ideogrammatic compound. Its top component, 冃, originally depicted an ancient hat or head covering, placed over the bottom component, 目, which means "eye". This structure, a hat pulled down over the eyes, suggested the idea of covering one's vision or moving forward blindly. From this sense of proceeding without clear sight or protection, the meaning extended to denote acting recklessly, taking bold risks, or facing danger head-on. Separately, the character also developed a distinct meaning for the physical emission or upward movement of a substance, such as smoke rising or water bubbling up.
