About
The character 省 combines the eye radical 目 below the component 少 (meaning few or small). Its earliest reading, xǐng, conveyed the idea of looking closely or inspecting, which extended metaphorically to introspection and self-reflection. The later reading shěng developed to express reduction, saving, or omission, aligning with the notion of "few" from 少. Eventually, 省 also became the standard term for an administrative province or major government department, adding this institutional meaning to its original senses of careful inspection and material decrease.
