About
The character "志" originates from an early conceptual blend of the heart component, representing intention or mind, and the component for a scholar or a person with a fixed aim, together conveying the idea of a focused heart or mind. Its core meaning has consistently centered on the concepts of will, aspiration, and determination, reflecting an inner resolve guiding outward action. Over time, a semantic extension emerged where "志" also came to mean "to record" or "a record", leading to the creation of a traditional variant form, "誌", which incorporates the speech radical to explicitly denote this written function. This bifurcation allowed the original form to retain its primary abstract meaning related to purpose and ambition, while the elaborated form specialized in denoting annals, geographical records, or written signs, though both forms share the same fundamental phonetic and conceptual root.
