About

The character 彀 is a phono-semantic compound. Its semantic component is the "bow" radical 弓 (gōng) on the bottom left, linking it to archery and physical tension. The upper-right element 𣪊 (gòu) provides the pronunciation. Originally, it was a martial verb meaning to draw a bow to its fullest extent, and by extension, the maximum effective range of an arrow. From this concept of reaching full capacity, it evolved to mean something that is sufficient, adequate, or enough.
