About
The character 彀 is a phono-semantic compound. Its semantic component is the "bow" radical 弓 (gōng) on the bottom left, linking it to archery and physical tension. The upper-right element 𣪊 (gòu) provides the pronunciation. Originally, it was a martial verb meaning to draw a bow to its fullest extent, and by extension, the maximum effective range of an arrow.
