Etymology
Depicts rope wrapped around two pieces of wood to keep them straight. Based on the original meaning "straighten". The current meaning is a phonetic loan.
About
The character 弗 originated as a visual depiction of two sticks, or possibly a bent bow, tightly bound together, suggesting the act of straightening or correcting something against its natural form. This original physical meaning, however, was largely abandoned when the character was phonetically borrowed to serve as a negative particle. Functioning as an adverb meaning "not", it operates similarly to the more common 不. Through this loan, its original structural meaning of bound sticks became disconnected from its grammatical role as a simple negator in texts.
