About
腊, the simplified form of 臘, combines the flesh radical 月 (ròu, 'meat') with the phonetic 昔 (xī, 'past'), evoking a sacrifice of meat for the past year, the ancient winter sacrifice at the close of the lunar calendar. In the traditional character, the right side was the phonetic 巤 (liè). This year-end rite also lent its name to the twelfth month, and because the cold, dry weather made it the prime season for curing meat, 腊 eventually came to mean dried, salted, or smoked meats.
