About
The character 边 derives from the traditional form 邊, which combines the semantic radical 辶 (denoting movement) with the phonetic component 臱. In the simplified version, the phonetic element was replaced by 力. The movement radical suggests traveling to distant or extreme places. This structure originally conveyed the idea of a nation's farthest geographical margins, its frontiers and borders. Over time, the meaning expanded from national boundaries to also refer to the edges, sides, or perimeters of objects, locations, or abstract concepts.
