About
The character 伏 combines 亻 (person) and 犬 (dog), originally depicting a person lying down beside a dog. This later shifted to the meaning "crouch" or "lie face down". From this bent, hidden posture come the extended senses of hiding and lying in ambush, as well as the idea of submission, to subdue or yield. The character also refers to the hottest days of summer, when people and animals retreat from the heat and lie low.
