侗 (dòng or tǒng) is a phono-semantic compound that originally carried a negative connotation before acquiring its modern ethnic significance. Its left side, the human radical 亻, signals that the character belongs to the semantic field of people, human traits, or states of being. Its right side, 同 (tóng), provides the pronunciation and also implies a sense of sameness or uniformity. Historically, when pronounced tǒng, it referred to an individual who was ignorant, immature, or exceptionally naive, an unsophisticated person. However, today, as dòng, it serves as the formal ethnonym for the Dong people, an ethnic minority group residing primarily in southern China. This transformation reflects a complete shift from an adjective describing intellectual immaturity to a proper noun designating a distinct cultural identity.
