About
吊 is a variant of 弔, which originally depicted a person carrying silk streamers used for wrapping arrows. Its earliest meaning, 'silk streamers for arrows,' is now written 繳. The meaning later shifted to 'to hang' (including hanging a person), and the character also came to be used for offering condolences. In its current form, 吊 combines 口 and 巾, a simplification of the earlier pictograph.
