About
The character 后 (hòu) combines two historically distinct characters with unrelated meanings. Originally, it was an ideograph depicting a person issuing commands, serving as a title for a sovereign or empress. The traditional character 後, however, was a phono-semantic compound using the movement radical 彳 (chì) along with elements suggesting walking and binding, indicating spatial position behind or temporal sequence after something. In the modern writing system, the spatial and temporal meanings of 後 were incorporated into the simpler form of 后. As a result, the single character now represents both the title of an empress and the concepts of physical behindness or chronological laterness.
