xiǔ (adjective) rotten; decayed

Etymology

The wood of a dying  tree

About

The character combines the wood component on the left with on the right, a pictograph of a dying tree. Together they convey the idea of wood rotting and decaying from age or exposure. This sense of decay extended to describe people who are extremely old, senile, or in physical decline, and by further abstraction, to ideas, institutions, or social practices that are outdated, corrupt, and beyond repair.
