The character 竞 differs significantly from its traditional form 競. The traditional 競 was an ideogrammatic compound: two identical halves, each formed by the speech radical 言 (yán) above the human legs radical 儿 (ér), depicting two people standing together and verbally competing. The modern 竞 replaces this complex doubled structure with 立 (lì, to stand) positioned above 兄 (xiōng, elder brother). Despite this structural change, its core meaning remains focused on competing, contesting, or striving for superiority.
