继 is the simplified form of 繼. Its earliest form was 㡭, depicting continuous silk threads joined together. Later, the silk radical 糸 was added to form 繼, with 㡭 indicating both sound and spliced threads. The literal act of tying threads to make them continuous extended to abstract continuation: succession, lineage, or carrying on a task or tradition. In the simplified character, 纟 replaces 糸, and the right side is reduced to a form containing 米 and a right-facing angle, making the character easier to write while retaining the core idea of connection.
