鲁 is a phono-semantic compound whose traditional form 魯 consists of the semantic radical 鱼 (fish) at the bottom and the phonetic component 曰 (to speak) at the top. Its simplified form retains the simplified fish radical 鱼. The original meaning referred to a type of fish or its taste, a sense now largely obsolete. The character is best known as the historical name for the State of Lu during the Zhou Dynasty. From associations with that region, it later developed meanings such as rash, rough, coarse, or slow-witted.
