奶 is a phonosemantic compound that combines the semantic radical 女 (woman, female) with the phonetic component 乃. It originally denoted a woman's breasts or the milk they produce, and later came to encompass the act of breastfeeding or nursing. In time, it also developed the extended meaning of 'grandmother' or 'elderly woman'. In modern Chinese, 奶 remains common both for milk and dairy products and for grandmother.
